Quick update on the red wolf head: hinged jaw now fully operational, next up is final detailing of the nose, ears, and fur.

I hope to find a way to obscure the little neck piece visible through the mouth some more: unfortunately I couldn’t move the hinge further back or the jaw wouldn’t be able to open to its current maximum range.

Luckily it’s only bothersome when viewing the head directly from the front with the jaw open at maximum (last picture is halfway open), tilt it a little and it gets hidden by the snout or cheeks (second-to-last picture).

To all my friends, colleagues, clients, and just fellow humans living through yet another historical event… I wish you all lots of strength, lots of luck, lots of justice, and hopefully in the end, still lots of overall happiness.

I’ll be donating to organizations that might help with that.

And clearing out my guest room, just in case someone needs a place to stay- wherever they’re from.

To my fellow Europeans: while it’s understandable that something hits a little closer to home when it is literally closer to your home, you might have more of a personal connection, and maybe feel like in this case, you might actually be able to DO something, which is great: let’s not abandon those further away, either.

I intended to have Noa dressed up as a sexy nurse for a Valentine’s shoot today, but sewing her a tightly fitting and completely unprofessional uniform proved to be a challenge that could not be resolved in a single afternoon of cursing at fabric.

Haru Adori werewolf

I’ll be starting the new year with some big projects- One of them being this Haru Adori. One body and 3 heads will have to be face-upped, body-blushed, modded and outright newly sculpted into one body with 3 different stages of heads: one human, one wolf, and one in between.

Pale head shown was client’s own modding attempt, but I decided I’d rather sculpt an entire new head, since it needs to be flatter than a human- and this way I can cast it directly in a matching color instead of needing to dye a head made of different materials, or do a ton of blushing- and it’ll give me a new head people can buy to put on matching bodies~ 😋

Orb holder, improved version

Happy holidays, everyone!

I can finally reveal one of the big projects I’ve been working on these past few months. Have a peek at the first cast of the new orb holder! I made one before, but this one is BIGGER, BRIGHTER, and just all around BETTER. And since it’s cast, I can make more~ instead of sculpting much more fragile and less intricate individual ones.

Note that in these pictures, it still needs to be trimmed, painted, and the piece of the mould supporting the “crown” is still in place: this resin takes quite a while to cure, and i didn’t want to risk bending the fully free standing “noodles” on top while it hardens further- but I really wanted this reveal for Christmas!

This silicone cup shape is also dimming the light coming through the top, but with the glass orb it’s meant for in place, it will look gorgeous.

I had originally meant to have a lot more done before Halloween, including readymade magnetic demon dolly limbs, an upgraded version of my Orb Holder and the werewolf head for a dear friend & client, but I only managed to get there halfway (new Orb Holder prototype about 75% done, demon tail prototype 50%, small horns prototype and moulds done but no cast items yet)…

So consider this a teaser for what’s next, and we’ll just extend Halloween into one long Nightmare before Christmas~

Since I had to test the pumpkin mould for Lights of Lilith anyway, to make sure I properly captured the details of the original (and this being a real pumpkin, it seemed handy to have a non-decaying copy, so I can make the mould anew if required), I cast this little hollow try-out… And got Ideas.

Since we’re currently dealing with a heat wave in the Netherlands and my atelier doesn’t have airco… Puppit Productions will be going on a semi-break till the 17th of August 2020.

Semi-break meaning that I can still be reached, but might not respond within a day, and will (probably) not be sculpting, because all my materials are acting wonky. Instead I aim to sort out & back-up files and overhaul my creaking old computer. You know, the boring stuff :P No telling how long I’ll be able to stick with that plan, though…

Commission: Rod puppet

The whole process, from start to finish, of making a rod-controlled marionette puppet for a client.

The doll was sculpted in epoxy clay, with the head replicated in resin through a silicone mould. I kept the original (top of) the head, the client got the resin version, primed & ready to paint.

Darker green eyes made by me, they’re polymer clay (fimo) with several layers of gloss varnish. The lighter eyes used to sculpt the eye sockets are standard issue acrylic eyes (I cannot remember the brand, sorry)- I needed something a bit hardier and scratch-proof than laqcuered fimo to define the eye shape.

The doll has a mechanical, magnetic jaw, that can be operated by pulling the metal wire that runs down through the body, with the same hand that holds the puppet’s main rod up. An additional (pair of) hand(s) is required to move either arm, the rods tied to them with fishing wire.

I’m considering re-working the head into one for Ball Jointed Dolls in the 20-25 cm/ fashion doll body range.!

It took me a bit to get my thoughts in order on this subject and find the right words.

I hope my customers all take the time to listen to black people and other discriminated groups, investigate their own thought processes and make positive changes.

I’m white. Now, as a cartoon character, I could be any colour. And I don’t mind if readers like to think of me as their own colour if that helps them relate somehow. But speaking as my creator, the person I’m based on, I’m white. And as such, will never fully grasp what it’s like NOT to be white.

And I’m almost certainly racist. Maybe not “severly”, maybe not all the time, maybe not intentionally- But there are bound to be biased patterns in my head. Because like any person, I am a product of the environment I grew up in, and I grew up pink-skinned in a country that benefitted greatly from colonialism.

No matter what other struggles or disadvantages I may face- My skin colour will never make it WORSE.

When it comes to things like this (image of black lives matter flag) I’m not sure what to do.

I want to help, but as a white-owned company just using #BlackLivesMatter seems empty. I’ve even seen other companies use it as a marketing strategy. I don’t want to latch onto human tragedy for exposure.

I even doubted if I should comment or do a comic at all. It’s not my voice that needs to be listened to. I’m not the focus group. But I shouldn’t stay quiet either, as though it doesn’t concern me.

I tried to think of ways to use my skill set to amplify the voices of others without it coming off as self-promotion. (thoughts:) Hold a sale and donate the profit? But I’m already screwing myself over financially on a regular basis as a freelancer. Sculpt some kind of doll accessories of black cultural origin? I know too little, that would just result in stereotyping or appropriation. Ask a black artist for a collaboration project? But would that be to make THEM happy, or ME? When does showing support become “scoring woke points”?

But I still haven’t found a good way. So I’m just doing whatever I think may help while trying to remain moderately sane. (describing depicted actions:) Trying to explain to white friends why insisting on #AllLivesMatter is kind of like refusing to help saving the rainforest because #AllTreesMatter. “Yes but these riots-” Mate, have you ever been bullied and ignored for years until you snapped? Attend protest. Reading articles on institutionalized racism and “traditions” in my own country. Reading personal stories by people of colour. Sharing links. Icon on black. Running donate-the-ad-money-videos on the background while working.

Including doing a comic- Even if I’m still worried it’s just White Guilt looking for validation. Because while I don’t want attention for ME, I do think it’s important to call attention TO. It’s paradoxal, but I do feel like I should roughly explain where Puppit Productions stands on this matter. However clumsy or insignificant. You never know if it might make a difference.

Cheating resin shortage

Sometimes, a prop takes more resin that you anticipated, and you’re onto your last batch… In that case, it’s time to bust out the cheats.

This is why I never throw out failed casts- they’re excellent for testing new paints & glues, but also provide the perfect filler! Just make sure to cast in layers, sufficiently covering all sides first, and be careful not to trap too much air under any given piece. Voilá, a solid resin part after all!

Besides the additional parts, the client wanted a black & metallic blue version, gradient on the wheels, with steel blue tires (a bit more blue than the standard grey colour), and an additional padded safety belt/ harness.

Making of the miniature electric engine for the BJD wheelchair. Not actually electric- it’s purely for show.

The four parts will be moulded & cast separately, with two casts of the axle cover and tube-like part, to create both a left and a right version.

Axle cover will be magnetic to allow easy removal for maintance on the back wheels.

Shown in the last frame is also the prototype for the matching battery, which will be connected to the engine by a glued-in cable.

Part 1

Miniature control panel for the SD-sized BJD wheelchair. This is the prototype, of which I’ll make two moulds (to make casting a little easier). The cast pieces will be mounted together on the frame.

The screen will be printed (very tiny) and stuck to that empty space in the middle. I went with “4” without indication of unit so it can be interpreted as either a leisurely walking speed of 4 KILOMETERS an hour or a quick march/jogging pace of 4 MILES an hour.

Officially announcing our new family members, Johannes & Jozefien! Johannes is a big red New Zealand rabbit, nearly 6 years old (but acting like 2), and Jozefien a lop mix (suspected Holland lop + German or French lop), aged 4.

Our dear previous rabbit, Doefke, a Madagascar Holland Lop, passed away last summer at age 9 (we tried to find her a mate but she would have none of it, so we just gave her lots of attention ourselves).

DIY BJD wheelchair parts

Sorry for the long silence, folks! I’ve been working~

Anyway, here’s what the DIY version of a BJD wheelchair looks like, missing only the fabric patterns & instructions in this pic.

You’ll have to bring your own (fabric) glue, scissors & tools (screwdiver, wrench and/or pliers) and paint for this one, but no sanding or carving involved, unless you’re looking to make modifications.

This pattern is Hujoo-sized, which probably also fits Pullip, Blythe & Azone, but I cannot be entirely sure- I don’t own any of those dolls as of yet. I just know their stuff usually fits my Hujoos.

For Halloween, have some free tutorials on how to make this cute doll outfit- except the socks.

Part 2/3: Sock sweater! Socks are the quickest and easiest way to make nicely scaled knitwear- they often come in bright colours and small patterns that are difficult to find otherwise.

Can be applied to any size of doll, or even plushies, as long as you can find the right size of socks.

NOTE: As long as the sweater is roomy/stretchy enough, you can easily cut open the front or back, hem those parts, and put some velcro or snap buttons in to make it easier to dress your doll. For the featured model you’d have to take the head off the doll to dress them. ^^'

Story behind the chair: The character of the doll it is intended for is an ex-Navy Seal with the codename Icebreaker. She was hurt in battle and has occasional seizures. Thus a wheelchair with metallic ice colours, safety harness, Navy Seals slogan, American flag and a seal silhouette (the actual US Navy logo is an eagle. Client & I agreed this was a huge missed opportunity that needed to be rectified).

The first SD-sized BJD wheelchairs are finally finished and orders are OPEN!

Due to the adjustable foot rest & back handles they should fit any normally proportioned Ball Jointed Doll between 55-70 cm.

The human dolls shown in the pictures are both roughly 60 cm (23.6 inch), the fox is about 53 cm (20.9), and due to her anthro proportions she appears a tad small for the chair.

Custom colours of both frame & tires are possible, as well as any special additions, decorations or adjustments, such as safety harnesses, prints, or silicone instead of latex tires- just shoot me a message!

From pattern to finished seating for the SD-sized BJD wheelchair. I chose to discard needle & thread almost entirely, because fabric glue was much easier to work with, especially because the fabric had to be fastened AROUND things, and it gave a very smooth result.

Prepping, priming & painting of the BJD wheelchair (SD size)

Difference between a gradient done in pure black & red metallic car lacquer (Hyundai berry red) and that same colourway after a few layers of transparent coating.

All parts for 2 chairs fully coated!

Example parts: Half a frame (black), front wheels in holder, and back wheels (without tires or handle rings) in high contrast black/metallic ice blue & gradient black/metallic berry red colour schemes. Shown on top of the fabrics that make up the seating & cushions for each colourway.

This (foldable!) wheelchair is meant for ball jointed dolls in the range of 55-70 cm tall, has adjustable handles & foot rest, rubber tires and swivelling front wheels.

The back of the right big wheel of each chair features individually hand-sculpted vignettes in epoxy clay, bearing my signature & a serial number.

My own (gradient red-black colourway) is number 000, first one to go to a client (in ice blue & black colourway) is 001.

The placement, high detail & uniqueness should make it easier to spot any potential fakes/copies (Let’s hope it won’t be necessary though).

All hard parts of the doll wheelchair before assembly and coating. Magnets are already glued in in this one, but otherwise nothing is attached.

Only things missing from this pic are the tip assist cover and the logo plate (small flat piece to be glued to the back of the wheel), as well as the soft pieces: tires, seating, pillows, belt.

Revised the arm rest for the #BJDwheelchair! The old one was too thin & flimsy, and sewing pillows this long and thin turned out to be a wobbly hassle. This new model is more sturdy and can just get some EVA foam (hobby rubber) glued onto it to achieve a much sleeker effect.

Finally finished the first proper tire for the #BJDwheelchair, without any bubbles, ripples or other deformations! The arduous task of making a hard mould to pour the latex in paid off!

(Latex and silicone do not like each other. Silicone cast in latex doesn’t cure at all, latex cast in silicone takes forever to dry and develops a lot of bubbles, so a hard mould had to be made)

Paint tests on junk casts of the cross beams for the #BJDwheelchair, scratch-tested, and a close-up of the metallic ice colour that will be used for the first wheelchair’s accents.

From back to front (top to bottom): Metallic ice colour, shiny black without primer, shiny black over Humbrol primer, shiny black over Spectrum primer.

Spectrum primer is the clear winner, it really took some effort to scratch the paint off.

Second picture: Close-up of the ice colour on the fabric I planned to use for the cushioning. The colours are pretty close match!

Test assembly of the SD-sized BJD wheelchair, save for the fabric seating, rubber tires, and metal wheel grips.

It’s been a year in the making, but it’s finally coming together!

Adjustable foot rest & back handles, swivelling front wheels, and thanks to a click-in-place cross beam system, it can also be folded once you take out the foot rest (and eventual seat padding- current wooden seating is just some scraps to rest the dummy on for the picture).

Cast in PU-resin, can be painted in various colours. The entire chair is about 13 inches/ 33 cm tall and should fit most dolls between 55-70 cm.

It’s been a year in the making, but it’s finally coming together!

Design, development, moulding, casting, fitting of the new cross beam support system for the SD-sized BJD wheelchair & full test assembly of all finished parts.

The old system proved a pain in the ass to install and not as solid as I had hoped, so I needed to revise. The plus side to that: The chair is now easier to assemble, sturdier, aaaand… can be FOLDED! :D

Test assembly pictured without the fabric seating (wood scraps are just to rest the dummy on something), rubber tires, and metal wheel grips.

The chair can be painted in various colours, and the foot rest & back handles are adjustable in height. The entire chair is about 13 inches/ 33 cm tall and should fit most dolls between 55-70 cm.

And there it is!

Casting, demoulding, finetuning~ All cast & metal pieces of one side (…but the cross beams for both sides for some reason, and without the foot rest), neatly arranged on the blue print.

On to assembling & painting the thing! And then all that’s left are the tires & cushions.

The last mould for the #BJDwheelchair ! The frame.

Pictured (top to bottom and left to right): 1- Prototype fitted inside the moulding frame, a base layer of silicone rubber already poured in, and the frame fitted with casting points and air channels. 2- Frame flipped upside down, resting on casting points & air channels on paper, being coated in a few layers of silicone to ensure full coverage on the bottom side once embedded. 3- Flipped back once cured, cutting off the paper where it got stuck to the air channels etc. 4- Placed in moulding shape, filled up with silicone. 5- Partially de-moulded (Lego removed), pouring the axle piece. 6- De-moulding, carefully cutting free the original. 7- Fully de-moulded! The original frame came apart when I had to use a bit of force to tear it off the wooden surface, but its job is done anyway, and I could easily repair it if necessary. The mould has suffered no damage.

On to testing it, to get a nice resin replica of the original prototype!

Featherlite failure

Despite already having bad experiences with other resins from Smooth-On, I bought a batch of FeatherLite lightweight resin for my doll wheelchair’s wheels. Since the back wheels are quite massive, I was afraid using regular PU-resin would make them too heavy and put too much strain on the axle when the chair is being picked up. While Smooth-On’s regular line of PU-resins is pretty rubbish, their silicone is fine, and I’ve also heard good things about their more specialized resins (Task series), so I took a gamble and thought this kind of resin might not have the usual bubble issues.

Boy was I wrong.

First of all, the packaging is very impractical for small applications, and the resin contains something of a filler material that causes each component to “split”: The filler floats to the top, and you have to almost continuously mix it to keep the consistency right. Not exactly the easiest to handle. But what’s worse, is that the stuff bubbles like mad! It’s supposed to be lightweight, but not FOAMY. I’m not sure whether this is just a fault in the batch or the resin in general, or if it stood on the shelf at the distributor’s too long, but it appears every bit as overly sensitive to moisture as Smooth-On’s Smooth-cast series.

What a waste of time & money. I hope my axle is strong enough to support the full weight of my Axson resin, and if not, I’ll have to pull some filler trickery to lighten the wheels. But I’m never buying this again.

How to make a hard mould for a tire!

A hard mould is the best way to ensure your tire will cure/dry quickly, without developing any weird bubbles/ folds, getting stuck to the surface, or pulling some kind of weird chemical reaction, and it’s easier to handle- because you’ll need to use rotation-casting for this sort of thing.

But you can’t completely encapsulate your prototype in something hard directly without getting the prototype stuck inside. You’ll need a flexible prototype for that- but rubber isn’t suitable for precise sculpting. So! There’s some steps in between.

First, create a prototype tire: A loop of the right size & shape (I’ve left out the whole “crap this stuff stretches how am I supposed to get the size right” try-and-re-try horribleness, sorry). Create a pattern, carve it out.

Then, create a flexible mould (Mould 1) of your prototype. Embed prototype in a way that will allow you to easily rotate it (I like to use cardboard & poster tack for nearly all moulds - I also used a wooden wheel in the centre this time). Apply several layers of silicone all around, allowing them to cure in between. Avoid touching them! Once there’s a nice thick shell all around, embed it in a casting shape, and fill with more silicone. Once cured, remove the casting shape and the prototype.

Next step: Mould 2, the silicone replica of your prototype: Brush the inside of Mould 1 thoroughly with release agent (Vaseline) to prevent moulds from merging. Re-embed Mould 1 on rotatable board/plate. Install casting shape in the middle to save on silicone. Lay ring of proper size on top op mould to be able hold the mould upside down, with pressure applied evenly. Pour several layers of silicone inside, rotating and turning, allowing each layer to cure. Then fill up the rest. When cured completely, gently peel the moulds apart. Keep Mould 2 on the casting shape. (As you can see, some bubbles formed regardless, but because the first few layers created a thick enough “skin”, it holds its shape well enough for the next step)

Lastly, Mould 3, the hard mould: Drizzle & smear several layers of resin onto Mould 2, rotating. Make sure the first layer is thin: too much weight will cause any bubbles to collapse and break the shape. Cause huge mess. Once it has a tough shell, you can wait for the resin to start curing a bit before smearing it on, to prevent an excess of dripping. When cured, remove casting shape & silicone replica (Mould 2) from inside, and carve away any protruding bits of resin. NOTE: You might also be able to use clay for this, depending on how big your mould is and how intricate the pattern. For a very small tire, polymer clay might be a good, mess-less substitute, as silicone can withstand the required oven heat just fine. Be aware that bubbles might swell a bit due to the warmth, though, and that applying pressure to the clay all around simultaneously can be very tricky to do.

Mould 3 can now be used to cast any silicone or latex tires in, without risk of sticking together or causing weird chemical reactions. You might want to glue one side to a wheel of sorts, or simply hold it between two plates so you can easily rotate it with latex or silicone inside. (Be careful not to prematurely tear away those plates though- It’s likely your tire will need several layers, and if any rubber got stuck to the plates, you risk pulling it out of the mould before it’s done, causing weird deformations.)

Commission: custom scissorhands & outfit for a Doll In Mind Johnny Depp Minimee.

For the photoshoot I tried to mimic classic scenes from the movie: The meeting in the attic, Edward’s collection of pictures of the outside world, the Show & Tell scene at school, Edward discovering he has a talent for haircuts, and lastly the final scene of the movie- Edward returning to the mansion and devoting himself to ice sculptures, supplying the town below with snow.

Heatwave update

Like most of Europe, the Netherlands are suffering from a heat wave and massive drought. I’ve put aluminium foil on the inside of all windows, keep them open during the night and close them in the morning to keep the cool air in, but it still reaches about 30 °C/ 86 °F in my work room.

The dry air is excellent for casting, but unfortunately, the heat isn’t. Working is difficult when the thoughts are being cooked out of your skull, and casting & mould making are things I need my full attention for.

I’ve adapted my work & sleep schedule so I can work in the early mornings and late at night, with short periods of sleep in between, but it still takes a toll.

Things should be better next week.

Unfortunately unsuccessful attempt at puzzle moulding: saving silicone/moulding rubber when making a large hard mould by only putting a part of the prototype through all the steps required, and merging the hard mould parts together afterwards. Which can be done if the prototype is fairly uniform, like with a tire.

(Small parts on sketch show puzzle CASTING: Where it’s the cast end product that is being merged together, not the mould- something I abandoned for the tire since I couldn’t keep the thickness of the cast consistent, resulting in weird overlap)

Step 1, photos 1-2: Embedding & moulding only one quarter of the tire prototype. Step 2, photos 3-4: Casting a silicone replica of the prototype. Provide with core (metal wire) to keep it somewhat sturdy & manageable. Step 3, photo 5: Support silicone replica with break-away structure and coat in layers of resin (or clay/plaster, if the form is suitable for that) to create hard mould. Repeat for as many puzzle pieces as necessary. Step 4, photo 6: Assemble puzzle pieces, depending on the fit some sculpting/ filling and/or a supporting cover all around may be necessary in addition to glueing the pieces together.

With so many steps there’s an awful lot that can go wrong, and due to slight changes/shifts somewhere during step 3 (most likely when re-fitting the silicone replica to the support structure between puzzle piece 1 & 2), one piece turned out a bit wider than the other, even though the pattern lines up pretty well. I could try amending this by sculpting, but it’s a difficult angle to work on, will almost certainly take just as much as carving & moulding the rest of the prototype, and I’m not certain it won’t show on the eventual tire.

Decided to mould the entire tire after all. I’ll just make the (first) mould as thin as possible to save on silicone. -.-

Base shapes for the back wheel tire of the #BJDwheelchair. There’s something oddly satisfying about making perfectly smooth hoops…

The flatter loop was a bit of an ill fit when I poured some latex on top and took it off to test for size on the wheel, but the new higher loop is the perfect shape will get engraved just like the small one (front wheel tire prototype).

BJD wheelchair WIP: puzzle casting

A sketch (in Dutch) and some test pieces illustrating how to make a hard, single-piece mould of a hard prototype.

In the case of this tiny tire, just making a hard mould directly would simply fuse the prototype & mould together: you can’t get the prototype out any more. So what you need is a flexible version of your prototype. But rubber can’t be sculpted like that, so what you need to do is make a flexible mould of the hard prototype, use that to make a flexible replica, and then make the hard mould of that replica. -.-'

This, however, takes a lot of silicone, so I tried something I call"puzzle casting" and “puzzle moulding” to save materials.

For puzzle casting, you follow all steps of regular hard-moulding, but only replicate a small piece, and then paste the eventual product together. However, in the case of rotation casting, it’s near impossible to get the exact same thickness on each piece of tire, so when pasted together, the overlap/ attachment points are very visible. It looks ugly and makes for a bumpy ride, so the tire NEEDS to be cast in one piece.

Enter puzzle MOULDING instead of puzzle casting. Step 1-2-3 are done according to hard-moulded puzzle casting, but at step 3 make several versions of the hard mould (instead of several version of the cast at step 4), and then join those together to make a single-piece hard mould. As they can be sanded and added onto, they can be made into a perfect fit, a continuous loop without any weird bumps or dents.

The biggest mould I made thus far: The back wheel of the BJD wheelchair.

I wanted to prevent having to use insane amounts of silicone (because that stuff is EXPENSIVE), so I had to do quite a bit of prepping to follow the form of the original as much as I could, while still having the mould be sturdy and thick enough all around.

All “walls” are kept in place and sealed shut with eye putty/ poster buddy.

I almost always cast silicone moulds in layers, to make sure there are no trapped bubbles in unfortunate places.

Before the last layer was poured on, I filled up some empty space with heavy construction cardboard & bits of old mould to get encapsulated into the mould. Another nice trick to save silicone.

Another little step-by-step photo collection of a mould for the BJD wheelchair. In this case, the centre piece that hides the nut with which the back wheel is held onto the frame. Sort of like a hubcap.

Newly finished moulds of the BJD wheelchair, with their first cast parts! Original prototypes in mustard & grey, cast replicas in cream white.

Shown here are the front wheel + holder, foot rest sliders, hand grip sliders and the arm rests.

Also finished but not shown are the foot rest holders and the front wheel tire. Yes the thing will have actual rubber tires (not air-filled ones though). I’m not sure why I thought that was a good idea to make from scratch.

Still left to do: Back wheel + centre piece, back wheel tire, supporting cross beams, and the main frame.

This week in “How even-??”… I found out that UHU por glue and Dragon Skin silicone do not like each other.

Pouring Dragon Skin onto something glued to cardboard with UHU por to keep it in place will result in the silicone not curing where it creeps under the object and touches the hardened glue.

To prevent this from happing again, I re-did the mould of that object, this time keeping it in place by pressing it into some nicely rolled out polymer clay, instead of glueing it onto anything.

And upon de-moulding discovered acrylic primer does not like polymer clay. -.-

The mould turned out fine, though.

Step one: Planning. Figuring out how the shape should sit in the mould to minimize trapped air and casting/air channels in annoying places. Determine if it needs to be a two-part mould or if it can remain just one.

Step two: Preparing. I decided on a one-piece mould, but if I were to just toss silicone all over the thing, the hollow tunnels would become a problem. So I put some eye putty/ poster buddy/ kneadable eraser or whatever you call it on side of each hole, pour in a tiny bit of silicone rubber and let it cure one by one. Then removed the putty, and coated that side with some release agent in order to have only one side stick to the rest of the mould.

Step three: Embedded in leakage-free enclosure (lego walls with some putty on the bottom, pressed onto a ceramic tile) and poured silicone. Let it cure (I actually already moved on to step four and took it out before I remembered I should take a picture, so I put it back…hence the carving lines).

Step four: De-moulding, carefully cutting out the original. The mould is now finished.

Step five: Casting. Having carefully poured in the resin, rotating the mould a bit to make sure everything is coated and air got the chance to get out, set to cure. Made sure all tunnel bits were aligned properly and the carving lines closed.

Step six: De-moulding the rough cast replica. All seam lines, air & casting channels are still attached.

Step seven: Carved & sanded resin replica, next to the prototype! Doesn’t it look nice? :)

Dragon skin silicone & UHU por glue

Ok, so apparently Dragon Skin silicone doesn’t cure when in contact with (hardened!) UHU por glue.

I tried to cast a mould of a flat thing I glued to some cardboard to keep it in place, and right where it seeped under the object a bit, along the edges, it did not properly harden.

Haven’t tried how it responds to other (uhu) glues yet. A heads up for mould makers I guess?

First mould & try-out cast of the BJD wheelchair were a success! These are the prototypes & freshly cast replicas of the foot rest holders.

Don’t mind the weird coloured chunks in the mould: They’re bits of old, discarded moulds that I keep around for exactly this kind of purpose- to fill up empty space and/or support mould structure. Saves silicone! ;)

Just got reminded WHY one should wear acrylic gloves when working with silicone, NOT latex. Something I completely forgot about while trying to make silicone tires in a latex mould.

Tried making tires for that BJD wheelchair. Sculpted prototype, made silicone mould, poured latex into that (rotation casting) to get a proper rubber tire. Latex is a single air-drying component instead of silicone (two components that react chemically), but when poured into a mould it dries much slower because it gets less air exposure. It DOES dry, though- just takes forever.

The result wasn’t as good as I wanted (little bubbles here and there) and I wanted to speed up the process, so I thought I’d reverse the system and also get rid of any allergy problems the tires might cause. Silicone tires, latex mould.

While clearing out my desk to try out the new mould (which took ages to make, because the latex could only be applied in thin layers), I noticed a previous test-run I did of a silicone poured onto different stuff (because I’m not a complete idiot and usually try out materials I’ve never used in combination before, to see if they can actually be used together). At of those tests, some of the silicone didn’t dry properly. I paid it no mind, thinking I over-saturated it with colour (which I did). But today I noticed the silicone in the cup had dried by now, while the silicone poured onto a bit of latex hadn’t. I got suspicious, and ran another test with pure, uncoloured silicone. Just to be sure, didn’t want to ruin my new mould. Turns out silicone that ran off the latex right from the beginning did cure, but whatever stayed in contact with it for longer than a few seconds didn’t. I was baffled. And annoyed that my mould was now useless and I’d have to go about casting tires in the tedious, slow, less-than-perfect way. And then I suddenly remembered at the academy they always supplied acrylic gloves to mould-makers, not latex ones. No-one ever really explained, and I just kept buying acrylic gloves out of habit- but I just spent five days re-inventing the wheel on how NOT to make wheels to find out WHY one shouldn’t wear latex gloves with when working with silicone.

Learn from my stupid tunnel vision here, guys.

Slightly older picture, but it’s probably the best I have of her. Ichigo, my Hujoo Berry. Been eyeing Ball Jointed Dolls for a few years, and while I nearly immediately jotted down a Unoa Lusis as my grail doll, getting one of those required some serious saving up. During that saving up, I ran into Hujoo’s “school girl Berry” and was smitten. She was sold out as fullset on every website, so Instead I started hunting for all the parts. In the process, she changed quite a bit: while her hair was still pink, the face-up I gave her still sweet & neutral and I managed to score a school girl outfit that fit her… Her hair was much shorter, her expression less shy and for her eyes I settled on a violet grey, instead of brown. The result was a slightly more wild, enthusiastic version of the little girl I adored so much. I still have her and love her dearly. And out of all my current dolls, Ichigo even is my partner’s favourite.

Resin gone bad

While I needed to order new resin anyway, because the back wheels of that BJD wheelchair require a special light-weight kind in order not to put too much stress on the frame when it’s picked up, and the Smooth-Cast gone hilariously bad… one of my other old resins aged remarkably well: the Axson F18 I previously used to cast my dolls in. That one yellows like crazy and therefore turned out to be not very suitable for dolls, but it still works fine for props that will get an all-over paint job anyway, like the wheelchair. VERY little moisture bubbles for a resin that’s been on the shelf for over a year, and still picking up details like a champ.

It DOES seem to have gone a LITTLE bit bad, though…

Smooth-Cast milkshake

Tested some of my old resins before ordering new ones, and I think it’s safe to say that this one should not be used any more. Unless for very specific purposes, like doll-sized milkshakes.

(Not every craftster out there, newbie or not, seems to know that PU-resin usually has a very limited shelf life. It does not like contact with air, especially humid air. Even if it still looks fine in the can/bottle, even if you screwed the lid on reeeeeally tight or even vacuum-sealed it… Sometimes this just happens. Yet there’s also resins that age rather well despite being badly stored, and cure properly even when the individual components start to get flake-y or crystallized. Sometimes a resin can even be one kind in this batch and another in the next. My advice for both old and brand new resin: Always run a little test before pouring it into your mould!)

Nearly all parts of the SD-sized BJD wheelchair are prepped and ready for moulding now! Only the wheels still need a layer of coating so they don’t get stuck to the silicone.

Final version will be cast in resin and spray-painted, with some parts (sliding parts & wheel handlebar) remaining made-to-size aluminium pipes. Model plywood for the foot rest, rubber wheels (no air) and the seating will be made out canvas (and cushioning).

Magnetic, adjustable foot rest and handles combined with various thickness of the seating pillows allow this chair to be suitable for a large range of dolls (between 55 and 70 cm, give or take. 60-68 would be ideal).

Note: To those familiar with wheelchairs the design probably looks a little out of proportion: This is because Ball Jointed Dolls typically have insanely long legs. Their ratio is hardly that of a normal human. It should fit most dolls just fine.

Running tire tests for the BJD wheelchair. They’ll be cast in latex, essentially tire-patterned rubber bands that can be stretched over the wheels. Should they ever dry out or snap, they can easily be replaced.

Annnd I installed a handlebar on the back wheel! So the sitting doll can operate the chair themselves without having to rely on a caretaker walking behind them. They still could let themselves be pushed if they needed/wanted to, of course ;)

Construction of the main frame of the sd-sized BJD wheelchair. As usual when sculpting, there’s a lot of sanding & fine-tuning involved. I chose model building aluminium pipes with thin walls for easy sawing and filing, and to ensure the final, cast version would look sufficiently metal-like in surface texture. Unfortunately this also meant they couldn’t make smooth, sharp turns very well (not without special equipment at least, which I didn’t have). So I made those out of epoxy clay instead.

Some parts of the final version will remain metal, because they need to be hollow and resin walls would be too flimsy: this because the handles on the back and the foot rest will have adjustable sliding mechanisms.

Base construction of the back wheel prototype for the sd-sized BJD wheelchair. Construction cardboard is arguably one of the most underrated materials ever. Easier to work with than wood or plastic, easier to acquire, and more environmentally friendly too.

Outside wooden ring: I planned on making one myself, but found out that two wooden hoops I still had lying around from an old lamp were the perfect size. Saves me a lot of time, because getting something perfectly round and balanced is no easy feat. <- this is the reason my attic is full of random could-one-day-be-used-for-something items.

Axle will be mounted on tiny ball bearings (second picture), with a centre piece in the middle of the wheel to cover the bolt.

Still needs a layer of coating before getting moulded & cast. I’m attempting rubber wheels as well! No air-filled ones though- That would be insanely difficult to manufacture.

Spent a whole day trying to rebuild the wheelchair’s front wheel holder because I thought the weight distribution of the first one didn’t work after all, and the swivel joint needed to sit a bit more above the axle… Turns out I just didn’t have enough grip at the top to test it. New year, new to do list! Or actually, much of it is the same. First off, that SD-sized wheelchair and the werewolf-in-various-stages. Then, my fox dolls. And I also have some new family members to customize, such as The-Doll-Currently-Known-As-Blotch, two Monster Highs annnnd… 2 Aileendoll Plapico’s. As well as an Obitsu hybrid. None of which will be easy mods or paint jobs, because why ever do anything easy… I also still need to overhaul two of my old dolls (one face-up and one blush which both have gone smudge-y) and finally build my Renaissance girl her laboratory. And in between fix my website, be visible on various fora and social media, visit some fairs and so on and so forth. So all in all, my to do list basically consists out of working myself to death without actually dying.

Perhaps some before that, if I don’t get side-tracked by making dolly Christmas sweaters or something.

Gave myself a birthday present: A rescue doll, bought third (fourth?) hand of BJD saviors on Facebook. He’s an FTM-modded Bobobie Sprite, who’s last owner gave up on him after initially trying to get rid of a bad dye job by the previous owner. I actually rather liked his blue patches, they reminded me of Delftware or blue china. I have several ideas for him and I’m not sure yet which to execute, but I will include the blue blotches into his look.

Tried some silicone eyes I still had lying around, they’re a bit too big for him but look so wonderful I might keep them anyway.

International Dolls, Bears & Miniatures fair

Took Neva 1.5 with me to the International Dolls, Bears & Miniatures fair in s’Hertogenbosch (Netherlands).

There weren’t many resin Ball Jointed Dolls there (in fact there was only one stand dedicated in full to BJDs, my friend Willeke from AngelsDesigns), but there were some jointed OOAK sculpts and lots and lots of awesome craft stuff. And glory glory hallelujah, I finally found new dremel bits! My favourite old shapes were really worn down and for some reason regular DIY stores don’t carry them (they generally only have some for drilling/carving and polishing, and very little for sanding). I was in desperate need for some new ones for modding work… And I don’t like buying tools online, it’s very difficult to tell the quality from a picture. So, yay for hobby fairs! Also got the teensiest, weensiest pump-action drill and some nice fabrics + haberdashery.

And it was quite fun to see all the surprise & interest from people used to more classical dolls & plushies in regards to Neva. One elder lady & her husband even went on a whole story about how they loved to see these modern dolls on more old-fashioned fairs: “Brings some new faces in, you know? Keeps it alive!” I couldn’t agree more. Fairs like these are contagious- I really want a 1:16 scale cabinet full of tiny trinkets now. Just for prettiness' sake.

BJD wheelchair WIP: connecting the dots euh- pipes

Connecting the dots- euh, pipes.

Still working on that BJD wheelchair! Market version will be cast (because it’s just too much work to sculpt it out of nothing every single time), but the prototype is made mainly out of aluminium pipes. Partially because it’s quicker than trying to make perfectly straight lines out of clay or wood, but also to make sure the cast version actually LOOKS metal-y, like a real wheelchair.

…I still have to saw, file & sand every connection into the correct shape though- and not all of them are straight criss-crossing lines. Saw, fit, adjust, fit, adjust, fit…

I did this shoot last year, but back then I didn’t have a Tumblr yet. It’s supposed to be one piece, I had to cut it up so it doesn’t get shrunken down and rendered unreadable by Tumblr’s weird picture formats- I hope it’s not too small to read.

BJD wheelchair WIP: progress

Been teetering at the brink of illness this past week and didn’t get nearly as much done as I’d hoped, but there’s SOME progress none the less:

-Made cardboard mock models (with poseable lower legs) according to the measurements of my client’s doll and the mediated measurements of other dolls in the 60-70 cm range.

-Drew a colour scheme of the biggest, smallest, average and client’s measurements, and drew up a real-sized blue print that should more or less fit all of those.

-Solved at least 7 new mechanical/casting issues that arose and made some decisions based on structural strength and (fairly) easy replication. Which basically means a lot of tossing and turning, long periods of intense staring at the paper and Sudden Realizations followed by hasty redraws.

I had hoped I could make the kit in such a way that assembling it would require no glue, that everything could just be slid, clicked or screwed in place, but it would be too difficult to cast and kind of weak. Especially the cross-shape in the middle, under the seat: This is where the frame gets most of its strength, so I can’t risk a flimsy attachment. So if people want to save money by buying it as a kit, they’ll have to tinker around a bit themselves, like you would with a model airplane. Fair enough, right?

(And yes, if you’re familiar with wheelchairs the design will probably look a bit off to you: This is because doll ratios aren’t human ratios. The entire thing is much longer and higher than a regular chair, because Ball Jointed Dolls tend to have insanely long legs.)

In-between working on that SD wheelchair, I fumbled around with my other commission… To be honest I didn’t like Adori’s teeth piece at all, frankly it looked weirdly cartoonesque and sort of terrifying to me. And since this little one is supposed to become a werewolf, I took out the teeth piece, pushed in some eye putty and needled around in that.

Much better already.

The new mouth piece will look something like this (but done in epoxy, not eye putty, obviously). She’ll also get some furry-tipped ears.

Measurements received

I requested some friends & followers to send in measurements of their 60-70 cm BJDs in relation to a commission for an SD-sized wheelchair, and my friend Gabriël, who has a huge collection, came through like a champ. Their measurements alone may be enough to establish an average and create a one-size-fits-most wheelchair for SD-sized dolls!

(Rainbow coloured measurements are those of my client, my prime template to build on. And yes that does say “Dayumn o.0” at the bottom of the Iplehouse EID list- it’s a superhero body and throws off the average completely xD)

More are still welcome, though: If you want to help, send me a message and I’ll send you a chart of which measurements I need.

Incidentally, these measurements confirmed what my eyes already witnessed: All dolls have legs that are proportionally WAY too long… In fact, your SD sized pal should probably be about 5 cm shorter to represent a realistic tiny human. xD

Oh well, screw realism. Onwards ye noble stilt walkers!

Dear followers!

I am currently designing and building a wheelchair for SD-sized Ball Jointed Dolls. The plan is to make it in such a way that it can be shipped flat and assembled easily at home, IKEA style, with any more complete assembly, custom colours and additional changes at an extra fee.

I want this wheelchair to be suitable for as big a range of dolls as possible, and for that, I need your help!

In order to “standardize” the model as much as possible, I need some very specific measurements that can’t all easily be found on any manufacturer’s website, or even Den of Angels. The more different moulds, the better!

So, anyone with a doll between 60 and 70 cm in overall length willing to help, if you would be so kind as to PM me your doll’s brand & body mould name and the following measurements, I’d be most grateful!

(I’ll probably make an MSD sized version and maybe even a Yo-SD one as well at some point, but one thing at the time…)

NOTE for number 5: No shoes, or (fairly) flat shoes! It would be better to have to put in a higher pillow or take off the doll’s shoes than have it dangle its feet above the foot rest. So leave out the platform boots and high heels for that one- unless your doll has fixed high heel feet. In that case, include them, and please mention it!

Another big order- a custom wheelchair for a 65 cm doll who’s character is an ex Navy Seal, codenamed Icebreaker. Hence the ice-blue details & seal + slogan on the back.

For a while now I’ve been getting the occasional request about a wheelchair I built before on MSD scale, but often the shipping of such a large and fragile item proved to be a deal-breaker for people. So I’m trying to build this new model in an almost “IKEA” sort of way, so it can be shipped flat and assembled at home with minimal effort. It will also be much more sturdy once assembled, with smoother wheel movement. I’m currently working out how to make the front wheel swivel properly, and trying to standardize SD sizes so it will fit most dolls.

Custom colours, full assembly, and any additions such as decorations or extra padding/ belts or even an extra high back or something could be done at an additional fee.

New commission: Little Red Riding Hood

New commission: To transform these three (actually all the same character) into Little Red Riding Hood, Little Bad Riding Hood, and full-on Bad Wolf.

Basically: Human, half-wolf, werewolf. Current additions to the third head were an attempt by the client. Character is loosely based on the little red riding hood from “Once Upon A Time”.

Epic Doll Fair 2017

Epic Doll fair was a great success! Small, but very well organised and with a lot of very enthusiastic people. Spoke with so many fans, sold a lot of stuff, and it may result in some new custom orders too! But as irony is the fuel of my life, nobody bought any of the sandwiches, new or old. And only some old macaroons, the new ones remained untouched… The new batch of pills was received very well though! And someone inquired about hamburgers after seeing the sandwiches? xD Cigarettes, cigars and joints were also very popular. Tsk tsk. I see now that I may have miscalculated- this generation of dolls doesn’t want any healthy or cutesy stuff. I should focus on junkfood and weapons instead! Sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. :P

Speaking of which, an extra thanks to the person who almost tackled me right at the start of the convention and went off on a lovely little praise/monologue about how much they loved the fact that I carried more… let’s say “disputable” miniatures and said they came to the con just for that~ It’s that kind of support that keeps me going, dear! Honestly, you made my day =^.^= Also lots of thanks to everyone expressing their love for my fox dolls and my stuff in general- nothing makes me smile quite like seeing someone dragging a friend over to my stand with a lot of “Oh you gotta see this!” And an extra thank-you to one of my most loyal fans, Valinda, who navigated the tricky and ever-changing roads of Utrecht to give me a ride to the station so I wouldn’t have to drag my 50 kg bag (with a broken handle) into a bus.

Best way to make miniature tomato slices (or any sort of fruit/veggie/sausage slices, really) out of polymer clay: Create an extra fat life-sized one first, then roll that out into some sort of thick noodle and slice little bits off it…

(Sorry guys, I’m happy to share the method but not my exact recipe for these- it took me three days to figure out all the right colour mixes… Transparent clay is so unpredictable! So I doodled through those notes to make them unreadable)

@crappy-crapolice & @akai-luna were right: My previous WIP shot were macaroon shells! Caps. Cookies. Whatever you call ‘em when they aren’t assembled with cream in between yet.

Back rows: SD size. Old models (smaller, higher) in the back, new ones in the front. Front rows: MSD size. Old models (again, smaller and higher) in the back, new ones in the front.

The new ones have better, more realistic proportions that should also make them easier to fit into most doll’s hands. I have also re-designed the boxes for a better fit, but pictured here are the old ones: I still have to print the new design. And estimate the prices for sale.

Upgrading doll-sized sandwiches

I’m upgrading my doll-sized sandwiches! The previous ones looked cute, but always seemed sort of clay-like, or like fondant cake decorations or something. While I can probably not completely shake that effect (not without an insane amount of effort that would render the sandwiches way too expensive for most buyers, at least)… I CAN upgrade the realism at least a little bit with some tweaks here and there.

One of them being having the lettuce actually being semi-transparent. And since transparent clay looks very different after being baked, I can’t trust my eyes when mixing colours. Baking tests were needed.

Doll-sized earphone prototypes

Made new prototypes for doll-sized earphones!
Previously I used to make each and every one by hand, but that just takes too much time. Also upgraded the design: I used to have the classic cone-on-a-stick Ipod earphones, but these new ones are more like the latest generation, and if I cast them in black they can be your everyday phones by whatever brand (Sony or something).

I might shorten the stem of the MSD on a bit, it’s a teensy bit on the long side.

They are tiiii-nyyyy! Now onto making a prototype of whatever these will be used with (generic smartphone and… a walkman, because I’m a sucker for retro).

Ichigo

A Hujoo Berry in Apricot skin. Sweet little girl, loves animals, can get real cunning and devious when there’s candy or other sugary stuff to be gained. Has a pet llama.

Noa

Unoa Lusis 1.0 in Normal skin. Shy. Loves dancing. Considerable knife skills. Has a strange accent (she tends to switch around b and p sounds, as well as w’s & v’s, d’s & t’s and s’s & z’s, but it’s not very consistent).

Ala

One Of A Kind, made by me. Illegitimate and historically ignored daughter of Leonardo Da Vinci. Kinda pale and freckled for an Italian woman- I guess her mother was Irish or something. Scientist. Almost mad, but not quite. Obsessed with flying. Allround smartass.

Jack O’Lantern

Heavily modified Hujoo Yomi (FTM mod, human ears removed, fang, pony ears, bat wings & tail added). Ichigo’s partner in candy-getting crime & brother-from-another-mother (no actual relationship- but they call each other bro & sis regardless). Part-time prankster and full-time fuzzball. Has a giant pet spider called Sebastian.

Neva the Snowfox

Puppit Productions Neva 1.5/. Second cast of my own to-be-produced BJD. She’ll probably be re-shelled or at least get new parts once the 2.0 version is in production. She’ll also get a tan sister, Seraphim the Firefox. Two heads, one character. Curious, slightly ditzy, bit flirty, always on the hunt for food. Likes to show appreciation through presents, mostly dead rats.

That’s all, folks! I have some floating heads and customized Monster Highs lying around, but that will be for another time.

my name is Puppit. I am a cartoon representation of my creator, and together we run the small company Puppit Productions.

We create all sorts of weird stuff over here, but currently our main focus is mechanical puppets, or Ball Jointed Dolls, and this blog is meant to be sort of a diary/ behind-the-scenes of our workshop.

So what to expect? Lots of work-in-progress pictures, reblogs of awesome works by other artists we admire, and occasionally, little random cartoons of me.
